Youth Commission on Alcohol Presents Recommendations to Scottish Government A youth panel is to call on the Government to ban alcohol advertisements from public places in a bid to "change Scotland's culture of alcohol misuse". Scotland's first Youth Commission on Alcohol will make the recommendations to Public Health Minister Shona Robison after a year-long investigation into alcohol abuse.
Matthew Taylor and Philippa Stroud provide two different perspectives on the kinds of reforms needed to provide long-term, secure housing for the people least able to afford it. These Viewpoints were commissioned as part of the JRF Housing Market Taskforce programme, which aims to address the root causes of instability in the UK housing market.
Review of Mental Health Law Consultation Analysis A Review Group investigated and addressed areas of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 which were experiencing continuing problems. The Review Group presented their recommendations to the Scottish Government in March 2009. The Scottish Government wished to consult on the recommendations and published a consultation document in August 2009 which attracted 82 responses. The main findings from the analysis of these responses are summarised in a report.
How can parents escape from recurrent poverty? The study explores the reasons behind the low-pay/no-pay cycle and recurrent poverty among parents, drawing mainly on qualitative interviews with disadvantaged parents across Scotland and focus groups with practitioners, plus secondary data analysis. It also presents some potential solutions to the problems identified.
Scottish Government's HIV Action Plan
The Scottish Government has published its HIV Action Plan for 2009 - 2014 which aims to reduce transmission and undiagnosed infection, to address the health needs of people living with HIV and to effectively coordinate services across the health, social care and voluntary sectors. The Scottish Government's strategy for HIV is available to download here. Provisional statistics related to Section 11 of the Homelessness etc (Scotland) Act 2003 which came into force on April 1st 2009. It gives local authorities early notice of households at risk of homelessness due to eviction.
